82 - Are efforts to conserve urban bees increasing risk of mosquito-borne disease?

Abstract: Homeowners plant native flowers and opt-out of mosquito control to support bees. However, maintaining resource-rich and pesticide-free habitats may also support mosquitoes. To evaluate how pollinator conservation strategies influence mosquito-borne disease prevalence, we collected mosquitoes from residential properties and tested them for West Nile virus. We found that planting native flowers and opting out of mosquito control increased West Nile virus prevalence and may unintentionally increase mosquito-borne disease risk.
