Abstract: Effective mosquito control is not solely dependent on scientific and technical interventions; it necessitates strategic communication that engages and informs communities, fostering participation in vector control initiatives. This presentation will examine the innovative communication strategies employed by the Puerto Rico Vector Control Unit (PRVCU) to enhance public awareness of mosquito-borne diseases, such as dengue, Zika, and chikungunya, and to promote sustainable prevention practices. Central to PRVCU’s approach is community engagement, which involves collaboration with local leaders, educational institutions, and grassroots organizations. By tailoring communication efforts to diverse audiences, PRVCU ensures that messages resonate across various demographic groups, from children to senior citizens. This inclusive strategy empowers communities to take ownership of mosquito control efforts and adopt recommended preventive measures. A significant aspect of PRVCU's communication strategy is the integration of digital platforms, including social media, mobile applications, and newsletters. These tools facilitate the dissemination of timely information and real-time updates on mosquito activity, allowing for targeted messaging during outbreaks. Additionally, the use of visuals, such as infographics, instructional videos, and interactive content, enhances public understanding of complex scientific concepts, making them more accessible and engaging. The PRVCU also emphasizes culturally appropriate messaging, ensuring that communications reflect local languages, customs, and values. This approach not only builds trust within communities but also promotes greater participation in vector control activities and adherence to preventive practices. This presentation will highlight the successes and challenges of PRVCU’s communication initiatives, providing insights into how effective communication can significantly enhance public health interventions. By employing innovative communication strategies, PRVCU has established a replicable model for improving community awareness and participation, ultimately bolstering the effectiveness of mosquito control programs.
