P-9 - Cage and experimental house trials to optimize the use of dried attractive bait stations (DABS) for Aedes aegypti control.

Abstract: Aedes-borne diseases, such as dengue, Zika, and chikungunya, primarily affect individuals in lower-income communities who are particularly vulnerable to infectious disease due to sub-standard infrastructure, poor sanitary conditions, cultural factors, and restricted access to information. These challenges usually result in adult mosquito control operations relying on chemical pesticides, which carry an elevated risk of toxicity to humans and the environment, and are associated with the spread of pesticide resistance genes among mosquito populations.


Attractive toxic sugar baits are a vector control method that targets the sugar feeding behavior of both female and male mosquitoes. Dried attractive bait stations (DABS) are a novel variant of attractive toxic sugar bait that has shown encouraging results for controlling Aedes aegypti indoors. Due to its unique mechanism of action, DABS could potentially function in conjunction with other vector management tools, such as spatial repellants, in a push/pull system that will be more effective than either of these tools alone, and could circumvent the challenges associated with human toxicity and widespread insecticide resistance of chemical control measures. 


In this study, we performed cage and experimental house trials to optimize key parameters required for the implementation of a DABS-based strategy for controlling Ae. aegypti in the field. Studied parameters included device size, height, shape and density, as well as the optimal concentration of active principle, and the effect of DABS in male mosquitoes. Furthermore, we present data assessing sugar feeding behavior and DABS effectiveness at killing Ae. aegypti in the presence of passive emanators.


The information gathered in these experiments will inform future field trials aimed at evaluating the efficiency of DABS as a tool for Ae. aegypti control.
