319 - Hunting a killer: West Nile virus surveillance in Salt Lake City

Abstract: Salt Lake City Mosquito Abatement District tests for West Nile virus (WNV), Western equine encephalitis virus (WEEV), and St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV) using a multiplexed assay published by Brault et al. 2015. Mosquito pools test positive for WNV each year, but no SLEV or WEEV has been detected in the district’s pools in decades. We will give a brief overview of our techniques, with special discussion of our recently re-evaluated thresholds and cutoffs. We will give a summary of recent trends and considerations for the northern Utah region.
