Abstract: The Hows and Whys of Sumilarv
Urban storm drain systems present a formidable challenge for mosquito control efforts, serving as extensive breeding habitats for mosquito species that impact public health. Vector control agencies, particularly those in densely populated regions, must intensify their surveillance and treatment operations within these areas to prevent mosquito proliferation. However, the unique conditions in storm drains, including regular drying and reflooding, demand a larvicide that combines residual efficacy with resistance to flushing.
In response, MGK partnered with its parent company, Sumitomo Chemical, to introduce Sumilarv to the U.S. market. Sumilarv leverages pyriproxyfen, an Insect Growth Regulator (IGR) classified in the IRAC 7c group, which disrupts mosquito larvae development and prevents adult emergence. Sumilarv’ s granular formulation binds to organic matter and concrete surfaces, offering resistence against flushing. Its low-dose, highly active formula provides 150-day residual control with a single application, reducing the frequency of treatments and optimizing operational efficiency for mosquito abatement districts.
Since its introduction, Sumilarv has gained widespread approval for use in catch basins, even those connected to natural bodies of water. In this presentation, Steve will trace the history of pyriproxyfen and Sumilarv, detail its proven efficacy across diverse field applications, and provide updates on label enhancements.
