199 - From Data to Decision-Making: Developing an Automated Dashboard for Mosquito Surveillance in Chicago

Abstract:

Background: In 2002, the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) established a mosquito surveillance and control program. Mosquitos are collected from traps placed throughout Chicago, identified and tested for West Nile virus (WNV) weekly at the CDPH lab from approximately June-October. Data are summarized in a static PDF report, emailed and posted on our website weekly. We describe the creation of a dashboard to improve data visualization and inform real-time decision-making.





Methods: All mosquito counts, species, sex, trap and testing information are entered into the Zoonotic Disease Tracker (ZDT), a CDPH developed application, weekly. Using a customized SQL query, an automated ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) tool extracts select variables from ZDT for Culex and Aedes Albopictus mosquitos and loads the results into datasets on Chicago’s open data portal. Portal datasets are used to auto-populate a dashboard created in Microsoft Power BI on a set schedule. The dashboard contains mosquito, pool and test result counts with graphs that display Culex collections and pool test results by week. Community areas with positive WNV pools are displayed as a map and list.



Results: Current and historic dashboard data are viewable by year and week. In 2024, over 19,000 Culex mosquitos were collected with 1,235 pools tested for WNV. In total, 207 (16.8%) positive pools were detected between weeks 25-40, peaking at week 32. Over half of Chicago’s 77 community areas had at least 1 positive pool. Ae. Albopictus counts reached a record high with 6,122 mosquitos collected for the year.





Conclusions: We developed a dashboard with automated processes for more efficient data dissemination to stakeholders. While only observed internally in 2024, CDPH plans to make the dashboard publicly available for the 2025 season. Chicago residents, visitors and neighboring jurisdictions will have this tool available to monitor areas at risk for disease transmission.
