researcher in public health
University of São Paulo, Sao Paulo, Brazil
She is a Professor of Epidemiology, Public Health Ecology, and Biology, Ecology, and Taxonomy of Culicidae at the School of Public Health of the University of São Paulo, Brazil. She studied at the University of São Paulo and received her PhD in 1994 based on research on the systematics of Section Spissipes of Culex (Melanoconion) (Culicidae). Her educational journey in the United States involved postdoctoral studies on Anophelinae mosquitoes at the Washington Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC, and a one-year position as a Senior Visiting Researcher at the Walter Reed Biosystematics Unit in Suitland, MD. Her work involved the revision of species of the Leucosphyrus Group of Anopheles, subgenus Cellia, with the description of six new species in collaboration with E. L. Peyton and Rick Wilkerson. Upon her return, she coordinated several projects in the biology and systematics of Culicidae with an emphasis on Anophelinae. She later expanded her field research focus to include malaria throughout the Amazon River basin, focusing especially on ecology, the impact of environmental changes on mosquito assemblages, and the increased risk of acquiring Plasmodium infection. She has a broad background in biology, ecology, and public health, with specific training and experience in key research areas for vector-borne diseases. During her academic career, she has built strong collaborations with other institutions and has an extensive network of national and international collaborators. In 2008, she was awarded the John Belkin Award by the American Mosquito Control Association for her meritorious contribution to the biology and/or systematics of Culicidae. In 2023, she was elected by the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene as an ASTMH Distinguished International Fellow in the Society for her eminent contributions to some phase of tropical medicine and hygiene.
