Chris Barker has studied the ecology and epidemiology of mosquitoborne viruses for over 25 years, with a particular interest in the effects of environmental factors on mosquito and pathogen dynamics. His group's research applies modeling approaches that draw on field and laboratory data sets to provide a better understanding of the mechanisms that drive epidemiological processes and to translate observable data into epidemiologically relevant risk estimates for human health. He is particularly interested in research to inform public-health policy. He directs the CDC-funded Pacific Southwest Center of Excellence in Vector-borne Diseases and the VectorSurv data management system, and he works closely with public health partners at local, state, and national levels on issues related to surveillance and control of mosquitoes and arboviral diseases.
